There are many steps involved when getting a tooth extracted. After we conduct a full examination, take digital x-rays, and rule out other procedures, we will verify that you are fit for surgery by checking your medical history. For patients with infected teeth, we will ensure you have the right antibiotics. Additionally, if dental anxiety plays a factor, we can prescribe you a sedative to help you relax. When the time for surgery arrives, the doctor will numb the area with an anesthetic.
After the procedure, healing generally takes a few weeks. We will ensure the bleeding subsides and you have anti-inflammatory and analgesics to lessen any pain or discomfort. While the initial healing takes place, we recommend that you avoid foods difficult to chew, brushing in the extraction area, and alcohol.
Types of Extraction
There are two types of extractions, the simple and the surgical extraction. A simple extraction is for teeth that are not impacted and can be loosened with a dental tool called an elevator. Once loosened, we will pull the tooth out by using forceps. For a surgical extraction, the tooth is not fully erupted, making it not easily accessible to loosen with the elevator, so it may require making an incision in the gums to gain better access to the tooth.
